What is SkinPen® Microneedling?

SkinPen® microneedling (collagen induction therapy) is the first and ONLY microneedling device in the world cleared by the FDA. SkinPen® microneedling is one of our most popular treatments for skin rejuvenation and can treat the following conditions on the face and body:

  • Acne Scarring
  • Enlarged pores
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Solar lentigines (sun spots)
  • Seborrheic keratosis (age spots)
  • Stretchmarks and scars

How does SkinPen® microneedling work?

SkinPen® microneedling is a highly effective collagen induction therapy that involves a multitude of microneedles pulsed into the skin to create millions of microchannels. Similar to fractional laser treatments, laser resurfacing, and chemical peels, SkinPen® microneedling induces a wound healing response in the skin and natural collagen production, but without the side effects and downtime.

It has gained tremendous popularity due to its smaller treatment head and ability to treat hard to reach places around the eyes, nose, and lips. It is also much safer and more precise than any other microneedling devices as the speed and needle depth can be easily adjusted during the treatment for different areas. It is not laser or light based, so there are no issues with skin type and color and can be used safely and effectively in darker skinned patients.

How many treatments are necessary to achieve a good response?

Improvement can be seen with each treatment but a series of 3-6 treatments is recommended to achieve optimal results. We will work with you for a customized treatment plan based on your particular skin concerns and your goals.

How long do the results last?

Everyone is different, but the collagen you make is your own and continues accelerated production over the next six to nine months as results improve over time. We recommend coupling all in-office treatments with medical grade skincare products to accelerate and maintain results.

Is SkinPen® microneedling safe for darker skin types?

Since no melanin-absorbing laser, light or heat are involved, SkinPen® microneedling can be safer than some lasers for darker skin types.

Who performs the treatments?

Our highly-trained medical aestheticians will perform your treatment.

Is SkinPen® microneedling painful?

A medical grade topical numbing cream is applied prior to your treatment making SkinPen® microneedling a relatively comfortable procedure.

How is SkinPen® microneedling different than a needle roller?

Needle rollers also use needles for skin resurfacing but are often too large and unwieldy for tight areas. They are also dependent on hand pressure, so the depth of penetration varies depending on the amount of pressure exerted and the softness of the skin, while the depth of our microneedling is very precise, as it is manually controlled with an electronic dial. There is also lateral trauma to the skin when the needles on a roller pull out of the skin as the wheel turns. This does not happen with our SkinPen® microneedling treatment, which relies only on vertical needle action. We do not recommend the use of needle rollers due to safety and sanitation concerns.

What are the immediate after-effects?

Your skin will be red and tingly, like a sunburn. Swelling and petechiae (red dots) are

possible depending on your skin’s reactivity level, but downtime is very minimal.
